Dan and I have now returned from our new year break! We went set off on our first adventure last friday to explore some of the South island. We started off by spending the first night in
Lake Tekapo which is about 2 1/2 hours south west of us. We got glimpses of snow capped mountains which was a first for me as I have not yet been outside of Christchurch. Lake Tekapo was simply amazing, we stayed in a campsite nestled in a forest area at the southern end of the lake. The views were breathtaking and I think I will fail trying to describe it!
We'll leave the photos for better descriptions (CLICK HERE TO SEE THEM)! It was so nice to be away from the city and seeing what we now know to be an amazing country! It was beginning to feel a bit claustrophobic in town...you keep hearing about and seeing pictures of gorgeous places......it's great to have now started to see them.
Unfortunately we had to leave to continue our journey to Wanaka (further south). The road we were on took us directly past the viewing point for Mount Cook and amazingly we got a clear view! The lake that the road passes (Lake Pukaki) was so beautiful, it was a milky turquoise colour and so bright, it set the snow covered view of Mount Cook off perfectly! We stopped for ages just staring at it! We felt rather small!
The journey to Wanaka is beautiful, from the plains of cantebury through the rolling hills around geraldine, over the mountain towards Lake Tekapo, the barren mountain pass through Gold Country and then the mine growing area in Otago! Every corner brought something different!
Will be posting the full set of pictures soon! Keep an eye out!!

Belated happy new year. Hope you are both well. Look like you had a good trip. Current photos make NZ look fantastic!
My brother got engaged to his NZ girlfriend on Christmas day morning. No firm plans yet as to wedding arrangements but it means a trip over there is becoming more of a reality. With baby number 2 on the way I'm starting to put away some money for flights.
All's well here at NORCOM.
Best Wishes
Sarah
