Just had to post that I, the geologist in the family, experienced my first earthquake this morning. 5.6 on the Richter Scale lasting over 3 seconds! It woke me up (I was in bed as I am at home poorly) as the bed was swaying and the wardrobe doors were rattling. All in all quite a surreal experience. No serious damage anywhere though thankfully! Read the local press article here http://www.stuff.co.nz/thepress/4225601a6009.html and the geonet statistics too http://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/quakes/latest.html

Ems, are you for real that that was your first earthquake?! I though they had earthquakes in the UK?
