We had a rainy new years eve and we must confess to going to sleep, waking up for the countdown, celebrating briefly then turning over and going back to sleep!! What can I say!
We decided to evacuate the campsite fairly quickly on new years day, mainly due to the sand flies....Emma had been eaten alive and has only today been able to put a shoe on due to evil bites on her ankles and feet! Shan't go into it here but it has been pretty gross! No swimming, no running, no biking but plenty of chocolate!!!! Not a good combo!
Anyway we rapidly started to pack the tent and sort ourselves out, only to take the fly sheet off and discover this critter hanging for dear life to the tent!
Urghhhh! To put it into perspective he was probably 4 inches long and he was BIG and looked UGLY and we had no idea whether he jumped, bit, flew or what! So we treated with care and thankfully with the help of a big stick and Emma sitting in the car tryng not be hysterical, managed to flick him into the bush! Our first encounter with a Weta!
We were then decided that a rapid exit was needed and a surprise to all that we made it off site by just after 9am!
We had a beautiful drive down the valley back towards Blenheim stopping only to take photos, buy cherries and visit Wairau River Winery! Yumm!
The area around Blenheim is heaving with wineries, we could have spent days there! The fact though that it was before lunch and we had to drive to Christchurch we thought it best not to! Wairau River is a lovely little winery and we took the opportunity to take some photos (and taste wine obviously!)!
Onwards to Christchurch!
I managed to fulfil a "must do" on the way home! I had wanted to (since reading about them in the guide books) to purchase a freshly caught and boiled crayfish from one of the vans in Kaikoura! We hadn't managed to find them when we had been previously but had seen them on the way up earlier in the week, just 20 or so Kms north if the town! So we stopped and we bought and we got home and we ATE! He was great!
So we were home, and it was lovely to be back, great to have been on holiday but nice to be back!
